Companionship Care for the Elderly in Kent

In-home companionship care: Everyone deserves more than just getting by - they deserve to thrive.

When you notice the little changes - missed appointments, unopened post, or the sparkle fading from your loved one’s day - it can leave you wondering what to do next. They may not need traditional care just yet, but there’s that nagging feeling: “How can I help now, and what does the future hold?”. That’s where companionship care can step in to help lighten the load.

What is Companionship Care

Companionship care comes in as a first step. We believe everyone deserves more than just getting by - they deserve to thrive. Companionship care at home helps bridge the gaps that often lead to loneliness or isolation, ensuring your loved one feels valued, connected, and empowered to enjoy life on their terms. It’s designed to provide practical help, meaningful interaction, and emotional support for those who may be feeling lonely, vulnerable, or simply in need of a friendly presence. It’s not about taking away independence – it’s about giving them the agency to live life on their terms. By responding to their interests and personality, we enhance their quality of life in ways that truly matter.

A care companion can offer:

  • Friendly company for tea and chats, trips to the garden centre, theatre visits, or even virtual tours of art galleries and museums, or online shopping if that’s more their thing.

  • Making every day smoother with help tidying up, shopping, preparing meals, organising post, or managing appointments.

  • Creating moments of joy with activities like dancing, pet visits, or arranging a special meal.

  • Revisiting old memories with a personalised video of the streets they grew up in or a relaxing drive through familiar places.

  • Bringing comfort and care for those in the late stages, with gentle hand-holding, sensory activities, or a simple act like wetting their lips to help them feel more comfortable.

It’s the kind of care that helps your loved one thrive, no matter where they are on their journey- bringing connection, comfort, and a reassuring presence to their days.

“I’ve got mum back...

And she’s happier than I’ve seen her in years.”

How Companionship Care enhances people’s lives: Meet Margaret and Jean

Jean couldn’t ignore the little changes in her mum. Margaret, had always been the life and soul of every gathering – quick with a joke and always busy with something. But after losing her husband, Margaret seemed to fade. Important bills were being missed, she kept missing appointments, the fridge was often empty, and the spark in her eyes had dimmed.

Jean felt stuck. Margaret didn’t need traditional care, but something wasn’t right.

That’s when Jean contacted Plan With Care to learn more about our companionship care and advocacy services.

We took the time to get to know Margaret – her hobbies, her favourite pastimes, and the things that made her smile. Then we carefully matched her with Lucy, one of our companions who shared Margaret’s love of gardening and a good book.

Lucy became so much more than a friendly face. She helped Margaret stay on top of appointments and bills, supported her with appointments and shopping, and – most importantly – brought connection and joy back into her life.

Now, Margaret’s garden is bursting with colour – a project she and Lucy tackled together, sleeves rolled up and laughing along the way. Tuesdays are for trips to the library, rediscovering a passion for mysteries, and Fridays? Fridays are all about sharing lunch, swapping stories, and laughter.

When Jean visits, she doesn’t just see her mum coping – she sees her thriving. “It’s like I’ve got mum back,” Jean says, smiling. “And she’s happier than I’ve seen her in years.”

The benefits of companionship care for the elderly

Companionship care offers so much more than just a helping hand -  it brings reassurance, joy and a sense of purpose to every day.

  1. Reduces loneliness and isolation: Loneliness can weigh heavily on both physical and emotional wellbeing – it’s been shown to be as harmful as smoking 20 cigarettes a day. A care companion provides meaningful company: someone to chat with, share hobbies, or simply enjoy a quiet moment together.

  2. Encourages social connection: Whether it’s a trip out, lunch at a favourite cafe, or a virtual catch-up with family, companionship care helps people stay connected to the world around them.

  3. Supports daily life: From preparing meals and tidying up to making calls and managing appointments, companions provide gentle, practical support that makes life easier.

  4. Boosts emotional wellbeing: Companionship fosters a sense of belonging, reducing stress and anxiety. Having someone to share stories with, laugh with, or simply be there can make a huge difference to mood and overall happiness.

  5. Encourages an active lifestyle: Companions can help people stay engaged and active, whether it’s through a walk in the park, dancing to their favourite music, or a drive out to places they love.

  6. Peace of mind for families: Knowing a trusted companion is there brings real reassurance to loved ones. With thoughtful plans in place to enhance daily life and exceed everyone’s expectations, alongside quarterly wellbeing visits and reports, families can feel confident that everything is just as it should be – and more.

What does a care companion include?

The cost of companionship care can vary depending on the level of support needed and the duration of visits. Typically, companionship care is charged at an hourly rate with prices starting at X an hour.  Hourly visits are perfect for regular support, whether it’s a couple of hours a week or more.  Tailored packages designed to fit individual needs, offer flexible options like morning companionship, afternoon outings, or full-day visits.

What some of our customers had to say…

“It's been remarkable how my friend has progressed and to see how comfortable and relaxed she has become. She was quite withdrawn in the beginning, but now seems to have integrated more and I feel this in part is due to you. I feel this has all happened in the last twelve months. The therapy dog and visits are a big part of this” – Michael A

“Throughout the time my friend has been cared for by your agency, I have observed professionalism, care and thoughtfulness in their approach to her. Always taking into consideration her best interest, involving her care and well-being. I would strongly recommend this agency to any person in need of their help in the future. I am grateful for all their help” – S R
